Addition Fortifies HPL’s Expansion into Intellectual Property, Whistleblower
and Business Litigation
ATLANTA—The Honorable J. Antonio (Tony) DelCampo, DeKalb County State Court, announced today his resignation as one of the state’s most well respected judges to become a named partner at the boutique trial firm of Harris Penn Lowry DelCampo, LLP, (HPL) effective March 15, 2011.
“Personally and professionally, serving the people of DeKalb County as a State Court Judge has been the most rewarding job of my legal career,” said DelCampo. “After watching great attorneys work day after day in my courtroom, I definitely wanted, at times, to stop serving as referee and get back in the game. No one is better at it than the guys at HPL. That’s where I wanted to be.”
The firm, now renamed Harris Penn Lowry DelCampo DelCampo, has an impressive record in courtrooms across the country, securing more than $77 million in verdicts in 2010 alone. Among those is the widely covered airport advertising bid rigging case where the partners won a $17.5 million judgment against the City of Atlanta, Clear Channel and Barbara Fouch.
Founding partners Jeff Harris, Darren Penn and Steve Lowry were honored that Judge DelCampo chose to approach their firm – out of the many options available to him. “When Judge DelCampo came to us, it was a no-brainer,” said Jeff Harris who, along with Steve Lowry, tried Mundy v. Ford Motor Company and Legacy Ford Mercury, Inc., in DelCampo’s court in 2009, resulting in a $40 million verdict in favor of their client.
Harris continued, “Adding Judge DelCampo is a compliment to our existing practice as we continue to expand into intellectual property disputes, whistleblower and business litigation. No one has experienced a greater variety in cases or has a more solid grasp on multiple areas of the law than Tony DelCampo. He’s seen it all.”
During his near decade on the bench, DelCampo is best known for handling some of the most complicated cases in recent memory including all of the civil claims originating from the Brian Nichols case, countless medical malpractice cases and intricate products liability trials with substantive verdicts—one of which was among the largest in the history of the state. “I’m ready to put into practice what I’ve learned over the years on the bench for the benefit of our clients,” said DelCampo.
The judge’s work was not only complex, but also compassionate. He spent much time establishing and growing DeKalb County’s DUI Court, while tirelessly striving to inspire early offenders to make better choices and turn their lives around. “That’s justice at it’s best,” said DelCampo. “The law sets the standard. As judges, we can also demonstrate the way to meet and exceed that standard by choosing a different course for one’s life. When a young person learns that, society is better in my opinion.”
“Our goal is – and has always been – to be the best trial firm possible,” said Steve Lowry. “Every attorney in our practice has courtroom experience. We specialize in trying cases to juries. Adding Tony DelCampo, a nine-year veteran judge, to our practice brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that is tough to beat.”
A native of Lima, Peru, DelCampo came to Atlanta at the age of 10 with his mother and three sisters. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies and Latin American Literature at Emory University and his law degree from Georgia State University College of Law where he served as Associate Editor of the Law Review.
DelCampo is a current member of the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Georgia as well as the incoming chairman of the Board to Determine Fitness of Bar Applicants. He is also a member in good standing of the Bars of Georgia and South Carolina.
DelCampo, who maintained an impeccably organized and up-to-date court, will hit the ground running according to Darren Penn. “We have a jam-packed trial calendar. Judge DelCampo is gearing up to jump in with both feet and we’re looking forward to the extra hands,” said Penn.
And, that works well for DelCampo who said, “I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work.”
